Specialty Protein Producers
D/B/A Green Planet Farms
South Sioux City , Nebraska
Kucirek Engineering served as the mechanical and electrical engineering design consultants on the extensive mechanical system for the Specialty Protein (Green Planet Farms) plant in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The 135,000 square foot processing facility is used to convert raw soybeans to protein supplement products. Design work included heating, ventilation, air conditioning, steam piping, process piping, domestic water, and sanitary waste and vent systems. The building consists of a food processing area, storage and distribution warehouses, office space, and research and development laboratories. The total construction cost for the project was roughly $40 million.
The project incorporated several different types of systems to condition the various spaces. The laboratory areas required unique filtration requirements and the warehouse areas are served by heating only units. The office areas are conditioned with an air handling unit with variable air volume terminal boxes. High-efficiency gas-fired hot water boilers are used for much of the space heating demand while steam boilers are used to produce steam for the manufacturing process.
